A group of 37 students from Garrett High School attended TechFest 2017 on Friday hosted by the Northeast Indiana Tech Coalition at McMillen Park Community Center.
GHS made its third consecutive appearance in the event designed to test students’ skills in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) competitions. GHS was one of 14 schools in attendance and won the Most Active Participant (MAP) competition. Garrett was also second in the Tech Fest Cup. The team of Sean Beerbower, Regina Novy, Nathan Williams and Caleb Smith placed first in the “Building a Website” competition. The group of Katline Cook, Dawes Dircken, Chance Hinkle and Brayden Neu placed third in “Engineering in a Box”. In addition, Tristan Bigelow, Owen Bullock, Johnny Maples and Jacob Shepherd combined to place third in “Mathematical Madness”.
The group was led by Garrett High School teachers Monica Cone, Brie Sprunger and Bill Thomas and also consisted of Drake Baker, Joseph Favre, Dillon McCann and Zane Ley which also competed in “Engineering in a Box”; Makinnah Grigsby, Kelly Lacey, Hannah Sobieski and Sydney Weaver in “Forensics in the Digital Age”; Beck Davis, Maranda Malcolm, Micah Malcolm and Casey Pontius in “Mysteries of Science”; Josh Blessinger, Avery Lehner and Caleb Thimlar in “Programming”; as well as students Reagan Baughman, Tori Baver, Sheldon Beattie, Makenzie Casselman, Carlos Jimenez, Megan Newby, Alexx Raske, Rachel Schultz, Tori Smith and Steven Wilmore who took part in breakout sessions to learn more about future career opportunities in STEM.
