Career Development Program

Garrett- Keyser- Butler strives to graduate responsible, productive citizens for our community, so we must acknowledge the growing shortage of career professionals in construction and manufacturing industries within our area. In our attempt to be proactive, we are creating a Career Development Program that will focus on preparing students for the opportunities available in Northeast Indiana.  This program is designed to integrate personal learning with manufacturing and construction processes- allowing students to have access to multiple career pathways after graduation ultimately leading to economic independence.

The Career Development Program at Garrett High School will begin with a hands-on “Elementary Career” class for students in 5th grade.  This will be implemented as a fun and exciting experience exposing each student to the basic processes involved in these industries. These hands-on, career related experiences will continue through the middle school years, with classes in 6th, 7th and 8th grade tailored to exposing students to the world of manufacturing and construction.

At the high school level, students will begin to turn information into knowledge. Students will use what they have explored to participate in courses that integrate core academic classes with manufacturing, construction and the like.  Using this platform, we will fully expose young men and women to the career opportunities within our community. Not only will they learn in the classroom, but they will receive real-life training and experience in a variety of skilled trades. By a student’s senior year, they will be fully prepared for an internship or apprenticeship in the trade of their choice. We will provide these opportunities by working closely with professionals in the construction and manufacturing industries and fostering a strong relationship between GKB and local businesses.

Students that successfully complete the program will not only have the academic knowledge needed to be successful, but the soft-skills and trade-specific expertise and experience they need to become gainfully employed with economic freedom.
